Dainfern College turns 21!

Dainfern College’s 21st birthday on Friday 1 June was marked by a wonderful Founders’ Day celebration held in the Multipurpose Hall.

Mr Brendan Quinn, Principal of the Senior Preparatory, welcomed all the students, staff, parents and alumni who attended despite the chilly weather. Grade 7 pupils Pares Malindi and Kelly du Plessis gave the Bible reading and prayer before Mr Tjaart van Stryp, Chairman of the Board of Governors, and Mr Matthew Davies, College Principal, addressed the audience, speaking warmly about our past achievements but also about the exciting new trends at the College that are taking us strongly into the future.

Several staff were acknowledged with Long-service Awards handed out by Mr Davies. The College Executive were then joined by Mrs Helen Fish, Chair of the Parents’ Association, to cut the stunning birthday cake made by Mrs Jacqui Redman and Mrs Terry-Lynne Killops.

The audience was then treated to a special ‘non-verbal’ musical performance of ‘A Thousand Years’ by the Junior Preparatory, where the children, led by Mrs Elsa Venter, performed the lyrics in sign language.

Mr Adam Albyn, Head Boy of Dainfern College in 2003 and member of the Alumni Association, then oversaw the tradition of the ‘Passing of the College Flame’, explaining that this signifies the journey through Dainfern College from Grade 0 to Grade 12. The Head Girl and Head Boy of the High School, Lateefah Monareng and Joshir Singh, then delivered the student addresses.

The school song was sung by all present and Pastor Peter Stoffberg, College Chaplain, said a prayer for the College. The final item was supposed to be the performance of ‘One Heartbeat’ by the Senior Prep Choir and High School A Cappella group. However, Mr Quinn then requested an impromptu ‘encore’ and the song was performed again by everyone present, with all the students from across the College joining in with energy and enthusiasm to bring the Service to a joyful close.

After the Service tea and eats were enjoyed by parents and staff outside the Multipurpose Hall before they moved down to the field for the inaugural Dainfern College Colour Fun Run. Pupils and students, some joined by their parents, had the option of running a 1,5km route around the school grounds or a 5km route that also took them through the neighbouring Dainfern Estate. Thankfully the weather warmed up towards the end of the run and all the participants had much fun throwing the packets of coloured powder into the air in the final ‘colour burst’. The event was a huge success and superbly organised by the Parents’ Association, sports staff and the willing teams of volunteers.

Dainfern College and the Parents’ Association would like to thank all our families for their support of this wonderful celebration of our College.
