Grade 6 mindset and growth activity

The Grade 6s started our year off with a Growth Mindset activity. We wrote out the words: mistakes, persistence, risks, success, courage, creativity, dedication and effort on plain paper and we asked the children to do a ‘Chalk Talk’. A ‘Chalk Talk’ is a silent conversation on paper. The children rotated in groups and wrote what they thought these words meant to them.  After showing the children a brief animated movie pertaining to having a growth mindset, we had a class discussion on their thoughts.  The children concluded that it's okay for us to make mistakes. If we don't make mistakes we can't learn from them. And in order to make mistakes we have to have courage to take risks sometimes, even if we are worried we might get it wrong. In order to take risks we have to put in some effort and persistence and we will eventually be successful.
