The Grade 6s start their new novel

The Grade 6s have started reading their class novel Wonder by RJ Palacio in English. Wonder is about 10-year-old August Pullman, who has a genetic facial deformity. After being home-schooled, he enters school for the first time in fifth grade and has to cope with a range of reactions to his unusual appearance, as well as a lot of typical prep school drama.

The theme of kindness features prominently in this novel, as many of Auggie's struggles in life are linked to the unkind responses of others. Other important themes covered in this book include tolerance of differences, friendship, courage, bullying and family.

The book was adapted into a film last year and is now showing at the cinema. I have encouraged the Grade 6 children to hold off on watching the movie until we have completed the book. We are hoping to do a ‘movie night’ at school one evening that will be loads of fun. Details about this evening will be communicated in the near future.
