Grade 6s speak to the Underground Astronauts

Our Grade 6 pupils have been exploring the origins of our species. Last term they visited the Cradle of Humankind, to view homo naledi and they had to research and present their own findings on the subject.

On 21 September 2017, they spoke to Dr Berger over skype!  We were the first African school to do so.

Dr Berger and the ‘Underground Astronauts’ (the team of scientists who excavated the remains of homo naledi, from the Dinaledi chamber), recently made new discoveries about homo naledi; they found that the age of the fossils is younger than originally stated (so modern man may well have met homo naledi!). They also found very well-preserved remains, which allowed them to do facial reconstructions, and “see” what homo naledi looked like.

Dr Berger is the leader of the Rising Star expedition and a Research Professor in Human Evolution and the Public Understanding of Science Evolutionary Studies Institute at WITS university. Dr Lee and his team answered questions posed by our pupils, about homo naledia, the team’s findings and theories, their life and work as palaeoanthropologists, and so on.

It was fascinating to see the scientists at work, in the cave (dressed in discovery gear, with headlamps atop their heads!), earnestly answering our pupils’ questions.

This was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for our young pupils, and one they’ll remember forever.
